What is Truth?

Hello Church Family,
Lately, I’ve found myself even more grateful for the peace that comes from knowing God’s truth never changes. In a world where so much feels uncertain — where opinions shift daily and “truth” seems to bend to whoever shouts the loudest — there’s something profoundly steady about resting in what does not move.
Scripture: John 18:37–38 (ESV)
“For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”
A Question That Still Echoes
Truth doesn’t sway with emotions, culture, or time. It stands firm because it flows from the very heart of God, who never changes. And in that steadiness, there’s rest. There’s peace.
I believe that our world is starving for this kind of truth. We scroll and search and argue — hungry for something that won’t collapse under the weight of life’s storms. Pilate’s ancient question still echoes through our generation: “What is truth?” And just like then, Truth is still standing before us. Truth is not an idea or an argument — Truth is a Person.
Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.” (John 14:6) To know Him is to find the anchor our hearts crave.
How We Got Here
Every generation has wrestled with truth differently:
- Premodern people believed that truth came from God or gods. People looked to scripture and divine revelation as their foundation.
- Modern thinkers turned to reason and science, politely setting faith aside.
- Postmodern minds — our era — replaced reason with emotion. Now truth is often treated as personal, flexible, and self-made.
Isaiah warned us long ago: “Each turns to his own way.” (Isaiah 53:6)
And when we all go our own way, the result is confusion, exhaustion, and a quiet ache for something real.
The Crisis of Truth
We live in a time when lies seem to travel faster than truth. What trends becomes what is true. Opinions go viral and discernment rarely does. The same old whisper that began in Eden — “Did God really say…?” — still floats through our culture today. The goal hasn’t changed: to replace revelation with relativism, to loosen our grip on what God has spoken.
But Jesus’ promise remains: “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32)
Lies always bind. Truth always frees.
When you build your life on God’s Word, you discover that peace doesn’t depend on circumstances — it flows from knowing something eternal.
A Foundation That Doesn’t Move
Truth does not change because God does not change. “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” (Isaiah 40:8)
When we open Scripture, we’re not scrolling through opinions — we’re hearing the living voice of God. His Word anchors us when everything else drifts. It steadies our hearts. It gives us clarity when the world feels blurred.
And here’s the miracle: God’s truth doesn’t just correct us; it comforts us. It doesn’t crush us; it heals us. It restores us to freedom and joy.
Living as People of Truth
The Church isn’t called to invent truth; we’re called to reflect it. Paul said we are “the pillar and foundation of truth.” (1 Timothy 3:15)
We live this out when we:
1. Seek truth daily. Let Scripture become more than a habit — let it become your home.
2. Speak truth with grace. Truth without love can bruise; love without truth can mislead.
3. Stand for truth with courage. The world doesn’t need louder voices — it needs faithful ones.
4. Show truth through your life. People may resist your words, but they cannot deny your transformed heart.
We defend truth not by debate, but by devotion — by walking so closely with Jesus that His character becomes visible in us.
Truth Has a Name
Pilate asked, “What is truth?” but never waited for the answer. Truth was standing right in front of him — Jesus Christ, the Word made flesh.
In an age that prizes comfort over conviction, we must remember: Truth is not a mood, a movement, or a majority opinion. Truth is a Person — Jesus, the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Hebrews 13:8)
So let us live in that truth. Let us love it, rest in it, and reflect it. Because when everything else fades away, God’s truth still stands — and it still sets us free. “You shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” — John 8:32
