The Man Believed The Word

The Man Believed The Word

Hello Gracepoint Family,

This past Sunday in John 4, one line kept echoing in my heart long after the sermon ended: “The man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him and went on his way.” It’s such a simple sentence, but if you slow down long enough to really sit in it, it’s staggering.

This father comes to Jesus desperate. His son is dying—not metaphorically dying, but actually at the point of death. You can feel the urgency in every word he speaks: “Sir, come down before my child dies.” And honestly, I think that’s where a lot of us live more often than we admit. We come to God carrying situations that feel urgent, heavy, and fragile. We want Him to fix it, heal it, resolve it—and we want Him to do it now.

But what stood out to me this week is that Jesus never went with the man. He simply spoke: “Your son lives.” And then the father had a decision to make. Would he trust what Jesus said before he saw anything change? Because when Jesus spoke those words, the boy was still twenty miles away. There was no proof yet. No update. No visible evidence that anything had changed at all. All the man had was the word of Jesus.
And somehow, that became enough for him to start walking home.

I’ve been thinking all week about how much of faith is lived in that space—the space between what God said and what you can currently see. That space can feel incredibly uncomfortable. Sometimes it’s a prayer you’ve carried for years. Sometimes it’s a family situation, a calling, a relationship, or a burden you can’t fix no matter how hard you try. And if we’re honest, we often keep asking God for more signs when He’s already spoken clearly through His Word.
What I love about this passage is that Jesus was doing something deeper than simply healing the boy. He was forming the father’s faith. The miracle mattered, but so did the journey home. Because by the time the father receives confirmation, something has already changed inside of him. He came running in panic, but he walked home in peace. Not because he had already seen the outcome, but because he trusted the One who spoke.

And I think that’s where the Lord keeps meeting us too. Not always by giving immediate answers, but by teaching us to trust Him before the evidence arrives. That’s hard. But it’s also where real faith begins.

So here’s the question I’ve been sitting with this week: What has God already spoken that you’re still waiting to see before you’re willing to trust Him?
Because sometimes the greatest miracle isn’t just that the situation changes. Sometimes the miracle is that somewhere along the road, fear loosens its grip, striving settles, and you begin to walk in peace because His Word has become enough.
Grace and Peace,

Pastor Daniel
