The Word Made Flesh - The Book of John

The Shepherd of Israel - John 6: 1-15

Rev. Daniel A. Johnson
In John 6, we come to one of the most familiar miracles in all of Scripture: the feeding of the five thousand. But John wants us to see that this miracle is not mainly about bread or fish. It is a sign pointing beyond itself to the identity of Jesus Christ. Jesus reveals Himself as the Shepherd of Israel. In the wilderness, surrounded by weary, hungry, and desperate people, Jesus shows compassion, tests the faith of His disciples, provides abundantly, and points us to the greater provision found in Himself. This passage reminds us that the wilderness is never empty when the Shepherd is there.
